В других системах отходы классифицируются на основе других принципов, например, по их происхождению (отходы от эксплуатации реактора, отходы переработки, отходы, образующиеся в процессе снятия с эксплуатации, и оборонные отходы). Высокоактивные отходы (ВАО) {high level waste (HLW)} - радиоактивная жидкость, содержащая большую часть продуктов деления и актинидов, присутствующих в отработавшем топливе, которая представляет собой остаток от первого цикла экстракции растворителем в процессе переработки, и некоторые связанные с этим потоки отходов; такой материал, образующийся после отверждения; отработавшее топливо (если оно заявляется в качестве отходов); или любые другие отходы с аналогичными радиологическими характеристиками.
